SASSA Status Check

SASSA status check refers specifically to checking the processing or payment dates of the R370 SRD grant (previously R350) application in the SASSA system.

To perform a SASSA status check, you query your grant application record through the official SASSA system.

Go to the official SASSA SRD status page

Enter:

  • South African ID number
  • Mobile phone number used during the application (If your number changed, see how to update your SRD phone number.)
  • Click “Check Status.”

The system returns:

  • Application decision (Approved / Pending / Declined)
  • Month-by-month SRD status and Payday
  • Payment date and payment method if approved

If your status shows identity verification problems, follow the step by step guide to SASSA e-KYC verification.

What is SASSA Status Check?

A SASSA status check is the official process through which any of South Africa’s 26.5 million grant beneficiaries can confirm whether their application has been approved, is pending verification, or has been declined for a given month. Administered by the South African Social Security Agency across eight grant types, the system covers everything from the Older Person’s Grant (now R2,400 per month from April 2026) and Disability Grant (R2,400) to the Child Support Grant (R580) and the SRD R370 grant, which remains frozen at R370 for the third consecutive year despite the 2026/27 social grant budget reaching R292.8 billion.

That budget funds grants until March 2027, with the SRD alone receiving a dedicated R36.4 billion allocation to extend payments through 31 March 2027. Seven of the eight permanent grant types received above-inflation increases of 3.5% CPI from 1 April 2026, meaning your status check will now reflect these updated amounts for every approved month going forward.

What makes the SASSA status check more than a simple lookup is the monthly re-verification process running behind every result. Each payment cycle, SASSA’s automated system performs a live sweep of your bank accounts, cross-references your ID against the Department of Home Affairs database, checks your income records with SARS, verifies you are not registered with UIF or NSFAS, and scans credit bureau records, all to confirm you still meet the R628 monthly income threshold required for SRD eligibility.

This is why a status that showed Approved last month can show Declined the next, even if your circumstances have not changed: a single family transfer deposited into your account can push your total above R628 and trigger an automatic disqualification.

Because verification runs on a monthly cycle, you do not need to reapply each month, but you should update your details on the portal every three months to prevent your application from lapsing. All five official checking methods, the SRD portal, USSD code, WhatsApp, call centre, and in-person at a SASSA office, query the same live database, so the result will be identical regardless of which method you use.

R370 or R350 Payment Dates May 2026

R370 payment dates refer specifically to the payment schedule for the SRD (Social Relief of Distress) grant, which currently pays R370 per month to eligible individuals.

Unlike other SASSA grants, the SRD payment does not have fixed dates. Instead, payments are processed in batches during the last week of the month, and each beneficiary may receive the payment on a different day.

Use the SASSA status check to get your exact payment date.

SASSA Status check Approved But NO Payment Reason and Solution

Approved means SASSA has confirmed your eligibility for that month, but funds are not released immediately. After approval, SASSA still needs to assign your personal payday and process the payment in batches, so each beneficiary gets a different date.

If your status shows Approved but no payment has arrived, the delay is usually administrative, not an eligibility issue. Banks can take 2 to 3 business days to reflect funds after SASSA releases them. Only update your banking details if your account actually changed, closed, or is not in your name as unnecessary updates will delay your payment further.

How to Read the Table

  • Older Persons Grant (old-age pension) is always paid first.
  • Disability Grant is paid the next day.
  • Children’s grants and all other grants are paid on the third day.

Payments remain in your account after the date, so you do not need to withdraw money on the same day.

How to Collect Your R370 Grant Payment?

The SRD R370 is paid via the method you selected on the SRD portal, either bank deposit or CashSend. Do not visit any collection point before receiving an SMS from SASSA. That SMS is your confirmation that funds are ready.

Bank Deposit

The fastest method. Funds typically reflect between midnight and 8am on your payment date. The account must be a savings or cheque account in your own name. Using another person’s account causes automatic rejection.

CashSend (No Bank Account Required)

Once your payment is ready, SASSA sends an SMS voucher to your registered phone. Take your SA ID and registered cellphone to any authorised store: Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Boxer, or USave. Tell the cashier you are collecting a SASSA CashSend payment and provide your ID number, phone number, and voucher code. You can collect at any of these stores in any province.

Fraud and Scam Protection

Fake Websites

SASSA has identified over 150 fraudulent websites mimicking the official SRD portal to steal your ID, banking details, and personal information. Only ever use srd.sassa.gov.za. Any URL not ending in .gov.za is not SASSA.

Fake SMS and Phone Calls

SASSA will never ask for payment to unlock your grant, request your PIN via SMS, or ask you to verify details over an unsolicited call. If you receive any such message or call, ignore it and report it on 0800 60 10 11.

WhatsApp and Social Media Scams

Posts claiming SASSA is distributing a “R700 grant” or “R5,000 food vouchers” are completely false. Never share your ID, banking details, or OTP in any WhatsApp group or on social media. SASSA only makes official announcements on sassa.gov.za.

ATM and Pay Point Card Fraud

Scammers at pay points pose as helpers, swap your card for a fake one, or watch you enter your PIN. Always shield your PIN when entering it and never let anyone handle your card or phone at a pay point.

Complete e-Life Certification to Avoid Payment Suspension

SASSA requires all permanent grant beneficiaries to complete annual e-Life Certification, a digital process that confirms you are still alive and eligible to receive your grant. Beneficiaries who fail to complete certification when directed by SASSA risk having their grant delayed or fully suspended, as non-compliance can be interpreted as an indication that the beneficiary is deceased or no longer eligible.

The certification uses biometric verification through the electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) system, which links directly to Home Affairs to confirm your identity. In April 2026, the portal experienced system glitches caused by integration failures with other government departments, which forced many beneficiaries to visit offices unnecessarily. SASSA has confirmed those issues are fully resolved and apologised for the disruption.

You can complete e-Life Certification online through the SASSA Online Services Portal from home, without travelling to an office. Beneficiaries who cannot access the portal may complete certification at any SASSA office or selected Postbank branches. If you have received an SMS or letter from SASSA directing you to complete certification, do not ignore it, act immediately before your next payment date.

Alternative Methods to Check SASSA SRD Grant Status

All available methods to check SASSA status (including SRD grant status) are listed below. These are the main official or commonly supported channels used to query an application record.

1. WhatsApp Number for SRD Status Check

Official SASSA WhatsApp number: 082 046 8553

Process:

  1. Send a message (e.g., “My R370 Status”).
  2. Follow the automated prompts.
  3. Provide your ID number when requested.
  4. The system returns your SRD application status.

2. SASSA Call Centre

Toll-free number: 0800 60 10 11

Process:

  1. Call the SASSA helpline.
  2. Provide your ID number and application details.
  3. The agent checks your status in the SASSA system.

3. Email Inquiry

Official email: grantenquiries@sassa.gov.za

Applicants can email SASSA with their ID number and details to request information about their SRD application status.

4. In-Person at a SASSA Office

Applicants may also visit a SASSA office where staff can access the system and check the grant status for them.

5. Check SASSA Status Without Data: USSD Code

If you have no internet or data, you can check your SRD status from any phone using a USSD code, including basic feature phones. No smartphone, WhatsApp, or airtime balance is required.

Dial *120*69277# and press Call.

Follow the on-screen menu:

  1. Select SASSA
  2. Select SRD R350 Grant (still labelled R350 in the menu, this is correct)
  3. Select ID Number
  4. Enter your 13-digit South African ID
  5. Your status for the current month appears on screen

If *120*69277# does not respond on your network, dial *120*3210# as the backup, both return the same result. Works on Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, and Telkom. Standard USSD charges may apply (typically R0.20 per session or free, depending on your network).

6. Checking SASSA Status Using the Moya App (Unofficial)

The Moya App can sometimes be used to access the SASSA SRD status page because it provides data-free access to certain websites, including the official SASSA portal. However, the app itself is not an official SASSA service and does not process or store grant information.

When used, Moya simply opens the official SASSA website inside the app, where the actual status check is performed using your ID number and registered phone number.

Because it is not operated or endorsed by SASSA, the Moya App should only be used as a last option, mainly when you do not have mobile data but need to access the official SASSA website through the app’s data-free feature.

2026/27 SASSA Grant Amounts

All nine SASSA grant amounts for the 2026/27 financial year were announced by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana in the February 2026 Budget Speech and took effect from 1 April 2026. Seven of the eight permanent grants received increases tied to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), with the actual percentage ranging between 3.2% and 3.7% depending on the grant. The SRD R370 grant received no increase for the third consecutive year. You do not need to do anything to receive the updated amount, SASSA applies the increase automatically from the first payment of each April cycle.

The table below covers every grant: current amount, what it increased from, the rand and percentage change, who qualifies by age or category, approximate beneficiary numbers, and whether the grant is means-tested.

Key facts About Specific Grants

Child Support Grant is the single most widely accessed social grant in South Africa, with over 13 million active beneficiaries. It pays R580 per child per month to the primary caregiver, which can be a biological parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, or any adult responsible for day-to-day care. The income limit for a single caregiver is R5,100 per month (R61,200 per year); for married couples it doubles to R10,200 per month. Orphaned or kinship children may qualify for an additional top-up payment, making the maximum potential Child Support package higher than the base R580.

War Veterans Grant at R2,420 is the highest single grant amount in the entire SASSA system. It is one of the only SASSA grants that is not means-tested, Veterans qualify regardless of their income or assets.

Grant-in-Aid is not a standalone grant and cannot be applied for independently. It is an additional R580 per month paid on top of an existing Older Person’s, Disability, or War Veterans grant for beneficiaries who require full-time personal care from another person. You must apply at a SASSA office with a medical assessment confirming the need.

Disability Grant is approved on either a permanent or temporary basis. Temporary approvals last between 6 and 12 months and must be renewed with a new medical assessment. If a beneficiary is admitted to a state institution for an extended period, the grant value is reduced to 25% of its normal amount from the fourth month of admission until discharge.

Foster Care Grant has a two-step increase in 2026/27: it rose from R1,250 to R1,290 in April 2026, and will increase again to R1,300 in October 2026, the only grant receiving a mid-year adjustment this financial year.

SRD Grant remains at R370 despite civil society calls to raise it to at least R624, the food poverty line. It is the only grant applied for entirely online, never requiring a branch visit, and the only grant where eligibility is re-verified automatically every single month rather than periodically reviewed.

SRD Appeal Status – Meaning & How to Check

If your SRD application is declined for any month, you have 30 days from the date of decline to submit a reconsideration request directly through the SRD portal by clicking “Request Reconsideration” on your status page, this is the mandatory first step and cannot be skipped. You will need to provide a written explanation for why the system’s rejection was incorrect, supported by three months of certified bank statements and, where applicable, an affidavit from your local police station confirming unemployment.

If SASSA upholds the rejection after reconsideration, you then have 90 days from that reconsideration outcome to lodge a formal appeal with the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA), this is a separate body from SASSA, the process is completely free, and no lawyer is required.

Appeals must be submitted for each declined month individually. If your appeal is successful, SASSA processes back-pay for the specific approved month. Once the ITSAA issues its decision, that decision is final for that month, there is no further escalation available.

How to Check SRD Appeal Status

You check your appeal status on the official SRD appeals portal: https://srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals.

Steps:

  1. Go to the SRD appeals page.
  2. Click “Check Appeal Status.”
  3. Enter your South African ID number and the cellphone number used for the SRD application.
  4. Submit the form to see your appeal decision or processing status.

Information You Need

  • 13-digit South African ID number.
  • Cellphone number linked to the SRD application.

You must use the same phone number used during the application. If you use a different number, the system will not find your appeal. Update your SRD phone number first, then try again.

Important SRD Appeal Rules

  • Appeals are submitted online only.
  • You must appeal every rejected month individually.
  • Appeals generally need to be submitted within 90 days of the rejection.
  • If your appeal is approved, payment is normally processed for the approved month.

SASSA Application & Payment Status Meanings

Application Submission States

StatusMeaning
Application SubmittedThe SRD application has been successfully submitted to the SASSA system.
Application ReceivedSASSA has received the application and stored it in the processing system.
Application CapturedThe application details have been entered into the SASSA database.
Application CompleteAll required information for the application has been provided.
Application PendingThe application exists in the system but has not yet been processed.
PendingPending status is normal for up to two weeks at the start of each month while SASSA runs its automated cross-checks against Home Affairs, SARS, UIF, and credit bureau records, no action is needed during this window. If your status remains pending beyond three weeks, update your details on the SRD portal to trigger a fresh verification cycle; if it still does not resolve after four weeks, call the toll-free helpline on 0800 60 10 11 or visit your nearest SASSA office for manual review. For applicants showing Approved but no payment received, note that banks require an additional 2 to 3 business days to process and reflect funds after SASSA releases payment, this is a bank-side delay, not a SASSA problem, and does not mean your approval has been reversed. If your account details changed, updating your banking information on the SRD portal triggers a verification process that takes 7 to 14 business days to complete before payment can be processed; only update banking details if your account genuinely changed, closed, or is no longer in your name, as unnecessary updates will delay your payment.
Period PendingA specific month of the SRD grant is still under review.

Because SRD is assessed monthly, the mismatch can affect one or multiple months until the records align or you do the e-KYC verification.
On the SRD status portal the wording appears as “identity verification failed”, while on the appeals portal it appears as “identity_verification_failed.”
Here is a step by step guide to SASSA e-KYC verification (also known as SASSA identity verification) with official links. Do this, and your issue will be solved without the need of any appeal.Beneficiary Verification RequiredAdditional checks are required to confirm the applicant’s eligibility.

SRD Means Test & R628 Threshold

The SASSA means test is a financial assessment that determines whether you qualify for a social grant and, in some cases, how much you will receive.

It checks two things: your income (how much money you earn or receive monthly from all sources) and your assets (the total value of everything you own). If either figure exceeds the prescribed threshold for the grant you are applying for, your application will be declined.

SASSA released an official explainer on the means test in May 2026 alongside updated thresholds effective from 1 April 2026.

The means test applies to most SASSA grants.

The Foster Care Grant is the only SASSA grant with no means test at all, eligibility is based entirely on a court order placing the child in the applicant’s care. The Grant-in-Aid is not independently means-tested because it can only be received as an add-on by someone already approved for another grant. All other grants, Older Person’s, Disability, War Veterans, Child Support, Care Dependency, and SRD, require passing the means test before any payment is made.

The Sliding Scale: How Income Reduces Your Grant Amount

For the Older Person’s Grant, Disability Grant, and War Veterans Grant, passing the means test does not automatically mean you receive the full grant amount. These three grants operate on a sliding scale, the more private income you have, the smaller your monthly payment will be. A person with zero private income receives the full grant (R2,400 or R2,420). A person earning R4,000 per month from a part-time job or private pension receives a reduced amount calculated against that income. You only lose the grant entirely once your income exceeds the threshold.

The Child Support, Care Dependency, and SRD grants do not use a sliding scale — you either qualify and receive the full amount, or you do not qualify at all.

How the SRD Means Test Works Differently?

The SRD means test is fundamentally different from the means test for permanent grants. Instead of a manual assessment at application, SASSA performs an automated digital bank account sweep every single month. Any deposits totalling R628 or more from any source in the month being assessed will automatically disqualify you — the system cannot distinguish between a salary and a family member sending emergency money.

The key rules unique to the SRD means test:

TransactionResult
Total deposits below R628Pass — eligible
Total deposits R628 or aboveFail — automatically disqualified
Receiving UIF paymentsFail — cannot hold both simultaneously
Receiving NSFAS fundingFail — double-dipping not permitted
Receiving any other SASSA grant (except Child Support)Fail
Family transfer deposited into your accountFail — counted as income regardless
Receiving Child Support Grant onlyPass — CSG does not disqualify you from SRD
Cash savings not depositedNot detected — only bank deposits are swept

Will the SRD R370 grant become permanent?

The SRD grant is currently funded until 31 March 2027 through a dedicated R36.4 billion allocation in the 2026 Budget. National Treasury has provisionally ring-fenced R38 billion for 2027/28 and R39 billion for 2028/29, signalling that the grant will continue beyond its current expiry date.

President Ramaphosa has indicated the SRD will be redesigned rather than simply extended, the term “livelihoods grant” has officially replaced “basic income grant” in government language, pointing toward a more conditional model tied to skills development and work-seeker activities.

The Department of Social Development ran a public consultation on the proposed “Livelihoods Support Grant” that closed on 30 April 2026, with a formal government response expected within 60 days. Finer details of the redesign are expected to be announced at the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) in October 2026.

Separately, the payment infrastructure underpinning the current system, the SASSA-Postbank contract covering 19 million beneficiaries on the cash payment network, is currently subject to a Constitutional Court dispute, though the court has kept the existing payment system in place and SASSA has confirmed no disruption to grants through the current period.
